Unlike many of the newer hotels in the Phoenix-area, the Royal Palms has a warm, cozy and personal feeling to it. Perhaps it is because the resort started out as a private residence first and later evolved into a fabulous destination hotel. The mansion was originally built in 1929, as the winter home of New Yorkers Delos and Florence Willard Cooke, and was transformed into the Royal Palms Inn in 1949.

The Chicago Cubs are arguably the most lovable team in baseball. No, we all know they don't have the best record, but perhaps that's why they mean so much to us. With the Cubs Convention just finishing two weeks ago, Cubs fever is back in the air with that 'hope springs eternal' belief that this could be our year. Perhaps it is that Midwest confidence in the possible, when history has shown its not always probable, that keeps us cheering for the Cubs.

March 4th is the start of Spring Training for the Cubs. Spring Training is held in the warm weather of Mesa, Arizona. Click here for the full spring schedule. Regardless, of the Cubs' record, no one can deny they are a winning team.

Their charitable contributions are impressive and their commitment to the community undeniable. At the Convention the Cubs management only upped their commitment to philanthropic and charitable involvement for 2012. And for that alone, the Cubs are big winners.

As the Cubs enter the 2012 season lets hope (once again) that they are winners on (as well as off) the field.

February 16 – 26, 2012

The Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show is one of the most regal events in Arizona (or in the USA for that matter). This premiere horse show dates back to 1955, when it first began at the Arizona Biltmore Hotel. Over the years the show has grown from 50 horses to over 2000, and has acquired a legendary reputation for attracting the crème de la crème in the Arab horse world. Today the Arabian Horse Show is held at Westworld in Scottsdale and attracts trainers, breeders, and the owners from all 50 states and over a dozen countries.

Good Bye to the Holidays and 2011

Austin, Texas proved to be a wonderful place to spend the holidays. There is so much good cheer, great shopping delicious restaurants and cozy cafes that its hard to spend a minutes bored or unhappy. Christmas Eve was spent at the wonderful Barton Creek Resort (what a fantastic Christmas shop) and Christmas Day Brunch at the Four Seasons. Everything was spectacularly beautiful (except the guy who wore old jeans and a scrappy tee-shirt saying, 'I am a Pick-up Artist.' You have to wonder why - oh why - someone would wear such a get-up to Christmas Brunch. Ugh!) I mean show a little respect... really.

Well, it is sad to see 2011 go. It was an eventful and exciting year and it appears 2012 only has more fabuluosity and adventurousity in store for all of us. Buckle your seat-belts!!

So let be thankful for our 2011 blessings and a big cheers to 2012!

Austin, Texas is Fantabulous!

Looking for a fun and exciting spot to visit? Check out Austin, Texas. The city is young and hip. The musicians are everywhere and you'll fall in love with the live music. Joe's Coffee is a great place to hang with friends and grab a cuppa Joe while listening to the local groups jam (see, the photo of the Love You So Much wall at Joe's Coffee).

The vintage boutiques are wonderful and a fun place to search for your next great unusual piece of clothing or furniture. And of course, the other specialty boutiques are 'to die for.'

The restaurants are fantastic and you can spend an entire week just eating your way through Austin. The BBQ, the wings, the unexpected, yet delicious, breakfast joints are all worth the extra pounds. And check out the Whole Foods (the headquarters is in Austin). This grocery store is amazing. Check out the goats cheese with jalapeno basil spread. Un-f@%*ing -believable!

If you wanna be a writer and you're looking for a fantastic MFA Program in Creative Writing you should check out Antioch University in Los Angeles. This low residency program is consistently ranked one of the top in the Unites States and for good reason. The instructors are excellent, the guest speakers/writers are inspiring and the structure of the program is flexible, yet intensive. The atmosphere really fosters comradeship and mutual support among students. There are several genres to choose from (fiction, young adult fiction, poetry and nonfiction) or you can have a dual or mixed concentration. This is the real deal and a writer's haven. If you have a novel or nonfiction book waiting to come out - this is the place to go.

Sarah Gerhardt (Livermore) is an unlikely world-class surfer and pioneer. But her unpredictable rise to surf stardom is one of the many things that make this hour long documentary so fascinating. Growing up poor Sarah was often without a school lunch, and to make matters even worse, she was often without a friend. Picked on at school she would return home to painstakingly take care of her handicapped mother who suffered from MS.

Her father was out at sea for eleven months at a time and her sister had been sent to boarding school. Sarah, who seemed to have by-passed childhood for a third-class ticket to adulthood, appears imprisoned by her unforgiving circumstances. But when her mother eventually manages to get a job, and the basketball court and a science teacher offer self-confidence and encouragement, she manages to take the reins of her own life and ride off in another direction (namely big waves). It is not surprising given her onerous upbringing that Sarah cites the feeling of “freedom” as the primary reason she loves to surf.

The fact that Sarah becomes a fun-loving woman, a Ph.D., and an iconic surfer and role model is inspiring to anyone who watches the film, One Winter’s Story. But the emotional electricity of the documentary is the raw jolt of honesty found in Sarah’s memories, intimate glimpses into her roller-coaster, off-beat life that is brilliantly edited and deftly depicted against a backdrop of visually engaging and moving cinematography.

The highlight of the film is when Sarah becomes the first woman in the world to ride Mavericks, one of the world’s biggest waves, and also know for its dangerous rocks and lethal sharks (located in Northern California). Her courage and talent sky-rocket her into surf-stardom, and there she still remains sparkling as a radiant female ground-breaker and authentic surf pioneer.

Sarah’s story is remarkable, but the film itself is beautifully crafted and captures not only phenomenal surf footage but the soul of a woman who found her salivation riding the world’s biggest waves when no one else thought it was possible. This is a story of hardship, struggle, sacrifice and success. There is deep grieving and enlightened glory. The film ebbs and flows as you follow Sarah’s life, and like Mavericks; it’s a powerful ride.

Film Review

This 1992, classic movie is still wildly entertaining today. It has a star-studded cast featuring Geena Davis, Rosie O’Donnell, Madonna, and Tom Hanks. Penny Marshall (of Happy Days and Laverne and Shirley fame) directed the film.

The story is loosely based on the real All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, and the 1943 Rockford Peaches (an Illinois women’s baseball team). However, the characters are fictionalized, but this does not stop from making an entertaining and compelling movie about a real women’s professional sports team.

The movie was a huge success in 1992, and hit #1 at the box office. The story of two sisters from Oregon leaving the farm to play baseball during the WWII era doesn’t sound like a predictable box office smash, but it proved to be full of enough sassiness, sex appeal and sports lore to seduce audiences worldwide. The film grossed over 130 million on a 40 million dollar budget.

Catcher, Dottie (Geena Davie) and her pitcher, sister Kit (Lori Petty) share an intense loyalty and sibling rivalry. The film orbits around these central characters with the Peaches Manager and alcoholic former baseball great Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks), and tough talking Doris (Rosie O’Donnell) and All the way Mae (Madonna) providing plenty of drama.

While the girls can play serious ball, they are still sexed-up in short skirts to bring in audiences. Dottie actually catches a ball while doing the splits to capture the cover of Life Magazine and ensure the continuation of a struggling women’s league. There is conflict, competition, but also an amble share of camaraderie. The film is fun but has depth and tells an interesting story.

The story is told in a poignant book-ended flashback, and reveals the special moments and lifelong bonds of “sisterhood” both on the playing field and within a family. This classic is well worth watching with a cold soda and a bucket of warm buttered popcorn.

Image the glamor and elegance of a bygone age when well-dressed travelers gathered in ornate train stations with monogrammed steamer trunks and dreams of exotic destinations. Open your eyes and if you’re lucky you’ll find yourself standing in the exquisite lobby of the Union Station Hotel in Nashville.

This luxury hotel was formerly a 19th-Century railroad station and is replete with Italian marble, intricate wood carvings, gold-leaf accents, limestone fireplaces and a lobby with 65-foot vaulted ceilings and prism stained glass. Mae West traveled through these beautiful corridors as did mobster Al Capone on his way to the penitentiary. Remarkably, at one time the station housed two alligator ponds.
The railroad station originally opened in 1900, but was converted to a hotel in 1986. In 1977, it became a National Historic Landmark. Union Station Hotel underwent an $11 million dollar renovation in 2007, and now combines the best of history with modern-day comfort and amenities.

There are 125 guest rooms at the hotel, each having high ceilings, panoramic windows, and marble bathrooms (with complimentary Gilchrist & Soames bath products). Adventure Woman Loves Sugar's Ribs!

If you're driving through Chattanooga you have to stop at Sugar's Ribs. This has been lauded one of the best (if not the best) barbecue restaurant in the USA. And for good reason. Everything is delicious - the beef, pork and chicken. Yes, the ribs are amazing and the selection of BBQ sauces is a fun adventure. The view is spectacular, too.

Don't miss it. Sugar's is one of those terrific roadside stops that make the "Great American Road Trip" so delicious.

Adventure Woman Loves the National Corvette Museum!

Just an hour outside Nashville is the National Corvette Museum. I always advocate checking out the museums along a road trip, but this museum is really an outstanding attraction.

Not only are the cars amazing - spectacular - beautiful. But the displays are extremely well done and places the cars in historical context. Many of the cars are accompanied by pictures of their celebrity owners inside the vehicle. The thoughtful exhibitions really give a wonderful framework to dream within...

Whether you are a Corvette junkie, a classic car officiado,or just love the speed and sleek lines of sports cars this is the museum for you. I can't recommend it highly enough. This is a great way to combine history, pop culture and artistic design into an exciting educational experience. The kids will love it (and so will you).

Adventure Woman Loves Nashville!

Broadway Street in downtown historic Nashville is always bustling with music, drink, dancing and general good-natured frivolity. The bright guitar and cowboy boot shaped neon signs of the honky-tonk joints are seductive calling cards to the hell-raising music and free flowing booze inside. I had a great time drinking and wondering in and out of all of the super cute little bars.

You’ll find thick crowds but high spirits swaying and singing along to the live country music. I had a great time singing along to the tunes. No, I can't sing, but everyone joins in and you really can't hear anybody - including yourself.

The saloon walls are cluttered with memorabilia of country history and visiting legends, and it’s easily to become immersed in the colorful décor of these glorious little bars. I actually had a fantastic time wondering around the Honky Tonks taking in the history. Its interesting and entertaining while you listen to the bands and drink your Jack Daniels (or soda pop)

You’ll find signatures of the famous (and not so famous) scribbled on walls and doors. Yes, I even wrote AdventureWoman.com was here!

Try to hit Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge (422 Broadway), and Legends Corner (428 Broadway). And while you’re in the area visit Nashville’s most eminent country music store. Ernest Tubb Records (417 Broadway) has been doing business for over half a century and broadcasts the Midnight Jamboree (the second-longest running radio show in history).

An evening on Broadway Street in Nashville will be an unforgettable experience. Lots of people on the honky-tonk scene dress in country attire which makes the atmosphere even more fun so don’t be afraid to wear your denim skirt with your favorite boots and sparkling cowgirl hat. I wasn't fully decked out but wore a denim jacket over my dress. Next time I'll have a cowgirl hat and a queen-size belt buckle.

It is like a little country Las Vegas in that it's just brimming with fun, booze, music and unforgettable excitement. A terrific place to party country style.

Adventure Woman Loves Kayak Fishing!

I find kayaking and fishing both challenging. I have spent a lot of time doing both and was never a natural at either. So I was not especially confident undertaking the new adventure of kayak fishing. At first blush, it I imagined it to be akin to walking on a balance beam while juggling (meaning a little difficult). However, once I was immersed in the sport I was pleasantly surprised by how easy and relaxing the two activities are together - it works. I love it. I was overjoyed and smitten by kayak fishing.

Here is why:

The kayaks keep you close to the water and you feel in charge of your vessel (unlike riding in a fishing boat). Further, you can paddle off a little from the group and have a little peace and meditation while fishing. I especially liked this aspect of kayak fishing because there is inevitably people on your fishing boat (even if they're friends and family) who talk - or brag - incessantly about fishing. Perhaps, because I am a woman not especially versed in fishing and casting I was always getting constant instruction (often taken for criticism) and this led to my personal frustration and more than once setting down my pole.

But given a little space and breathing room, I felt eager and empowered to really fish. I went on my kayak adventure with a few good friends and my 10-year-old daughter and everyone (male/female and young/old) loved it. Perhaps, it is also due to the positive and encouraging personality of Neil Taylor, owner of Strike Three Kayak Fishing. He knows when to instruct and knows when to let you operate independently and have a little (or a lot) of fun.

My daughter caught the biggest and most fish (typical of a 10-year-old girl to steal the show fishing). I caught a nice size red fish and had something rather large and fast break my line (this elicited smiles and screams). Now I actually own one of great classic American "The big that got away" stories.

Another bonus to the fishing was the beauty of it all. We were near Clearwater, Florida, and the water was warm and beautiful. There were schools of dolphins just yards away and elegant white egrets and pelicans catching fish. The aqua blue water and white shimmering sand were transfixing. Several times I sat in the sand while fishing with the lapping water hitting chest high. It was paradise.

We started around 8AM (we were running late - see the previous blog) and finished about 1:30. At that point we had enough sun and fishing for the day.

I can't recommend this adventure enough. If you're anywhere near the Tampa Bay/Orlando area give Neil a call and tell him Adventure Woman sent you!

Wow! If you could throw a party like this you'd never leave home either.
Not only were there several appetizers, but about five starters, as well. Then we had lobster flown in from Maine. OMG! Yes, fresh lobster - to die for. This was followed by fresh berries in a rum sauce... this feast with beer, wine, scotch and cigars lasted until 3:00Am. Not bad if we didn't have to fish at 5AM. Ugh! But what a great time we had kayak fishing... more on that in the next segment of Adventure Woman Blog.

REAL Adventure Woman Barbara Cartland

Barbara Cartland is one of the most interesting women to ever grace the planet Earth. She was involved in aviation (making a significant contribution), and made sure WWII brides had beautiful white wedding dresses on their own big day. She sold over 1,000 million books landing her in the Guinness Book of World Records and is arguably the world's most famous romance novelist. If that isn't enough, she was the step-grandmother to the late, great Princess Diana of Wales.

I had the privilege of meeting Dame Cartland at her Hunting Lodge in Scotland years ago (she actually gave a Honeymoon party for my husband and me). She was kind, beautiful and attentive with an exuberant and extravagant personality. It is one of the most memorable evenings of my life. Sadly, she died in 2000, but her books are still widely in print and make an entertaining and absorbing evening of reading.

Barbara sold over 1,000 million books (the 7th most translated author in the world) and is in the Guinness Book of World Records. Barbara helped to create the first aeroplane-towed glider airmail for which she received the Bishop Wright Air industry Award for her contribution to the development of aviation. She received the most distinguished award given by the city of Paris "La Medaille de Vermeil de la Ville de Paris" for her contributions as an author. In 1981 she was made a Dame of the Order of the British Empire for her contribution to literature and for her community work. Undoubtedly, she was the adventure heroine of her own romance story.

Adventure Woman Loves Tubing!

Do you love the snow but don't know how to ski or snowboard?

If so, try tubing. Tubing is super fun and and very easy. You simply take an inner tube (typically supplied by the outfitter) and ride it to the top of the hill (usually by a pulley mechanism).

Once you get to the top of the hill you simply sit and slide! And its really exciting. Further, the kids will love it and typically no one ever gets hurt. Its just a great time.

Add a little post-tubing hot chocolate and you've just created a great experience and a fabulous family memory.

Tubing is a wonderful winter good time. Don't miss it!

“Seven Must-Do Activities”

One of the most spectacularly beautiful and deeply romantic cities in the world is Venice, Italy. The old-world Venetian architecture and secluded waterways navigated by the lilting voices of singing gondoliers make for an intimately dreamy experience. Founded in the 6th Century Venice has enjoyed a history of great wealth and artistic achievement. Operatic composer, Antonio Vivaldi, was from Venice and other luminaries include, artists Veronese, Canaletto, and Fortuny, and the legendary, seducer of women, Casanova. If you and your own “Casanova” plan to visit Venice make an effort to see Adventure Woman’s “Must-Do” Activities.

1.Fortuny Museum: This wonderful museum has thankfully reopened after being closed for renovations. Mariano Fortuny converted this palace into a magnificent painting studio and it retains its former authenticity and splendor with Fortuny’s personal collections. It showcases Fortuny’s paintings, photography and luxurious fabrics. The studio was donated by Fortuny’s widow to Venice in 1956.

2. St. Mark’s Basilica: (Known as Basilica Cattedrale Patriarcale di San Marco) is the most famous and decrative of Venice’s churches and is located in St. Marks Square connected to the Doges (see below). It is an example of extravagant Byzantine architecture. The inside is just as impressive as the outside with gold and bronze mosaics on the ceilings (8,000 square meters). The marble flooring is also an exquisite piece of artwork. Actually, you are surrounded by beauty everywhere you look in the Basilica. The Greek Horses installed at the Basilica have enjoyed an amazing and colorful history (they are well-traveled horses). 3. Grand Canal Tour: The Grand Canal Tour is a great way to take in the wide-variety of Venetian Architecture and absorb the diverse history of the city. It is the main waterway of Venice and is approximately two miles long and 350 feet at its widest point. Many celebrities and dignitaries have lived along this prime section of real estate and it makes for an entertaining and visually stimulating tour. Try to take an open-top boat for better views.

4. Tour Doge’s Palace: This phenomenal building, known as Palazzo Ducale, is located in St. Mark’s Square and on the edge of the Venetian Lagoon. The structure was used as governmental headquarters for the Venice Republic and home of the Republic leader, the Doge. It has been converted into a museum with significant paintings and showcases grandiose gothic architecture (construction began in the early 1300s). http://www.museiciviciveneziani.it/frame.asp?musid=8&sezione=musei

5. Take the Elevator to the Top of Campanile: The campanile is the bell tower located in St. Mark’s Square. From the top of the Campanile you can see an awe-inspiring views of the city of Venice and the famous lagoons and canal ways. And good news! There is an elevator inside so you don’t have to worry about climbing the 323 foot structure. The Campanile has a long history and endured centuries of change. In 1902 it finally collapsed but was rebuilt in 1912.

6. Piazza San Marco: (Also known as St. Mark’s Square). The “Piazza” was called “the Drawing room of Europe,” by Napoleon. This is a perfect place to take photographs as the views in every direction are spectacular. A century old tradition of St. Mark’s Square was feeding the pigeons. However, it was banned in 2008 due to perceived damage to nearby buildings and health concerns. Another concern for the Square is the flooding. St. Mark’s Square is the lowest point in Venice and is the first place to flood. Nevertheless, one can’t go to Venice without strolling around this iconic spot and imaging the legions of historic people who have strode before.

7. Take a Gondola Ride: Taking a gondola is a definite “Must Do” when visiting Venice. Yes, it is a little expensive but the memories and the experience will be worth it. A typical gondola ride is 40-50 minutes (costing around $100 US Dollars). The fare is officially set. You can share a gondola with other people (up to six) and split the fare. A gondola ride may be more romantic at night but the price increases as well. If you want a singing gondolier ask beforehand if this is a service provided.

Skydiving the great adventure!

Have you ever dreamed of skydiving? If you did, you're not unlike me or thousands of other people. I have wanted to try skydiving for the last 20+ years but I have never garnered the courage to actually JUMP!

Finally, on a trip to Las Vegas I decided to finally give it a try. Let me tell you, it is not for the faint of heart.

The worst part is boarding the plane and ascending higher and higher and higher and higher and higher... Well, you know what I mean. Finally the cars and buildings look like the proverbial "ants" on the ground.

When I fell out of the plane I think I thought I was about to die. It is difficult to breathe at that altitude and it took me by surprise (as I had never thought of it previously).

Once you get used to falling it becomes more "exciting" than "frightening." The feeling of "free-falling" is amazing and thrilling. When the parachute eventually opens you begin floating (now secure in the knowledge you're going to live)and it is just fabulously beautiful. I felt like a bird - butterfly- kite twisting and turing in the air. The adventure was surreal and so much fun. Yes! Fun!

When we landed on the ground it was like jumping from a chair. Actually, probably not that much impact. It was a graceful ending to an insanely adventurous experience.

I loved every minute of it.

Oak Alley is one of America’s grandest historical structures and is a must see for every romantic spirit. Oak Alley, built is 1837, is named after the double row of great oak trees which form an impressive canopy. The trees were planted in the 18th Century (before the mansion was built) and leads to the Mississippi River. Oak Alley was originally an antebellum sugar cane plantation, but was ravaged during the Civil War. The mansion was later restored. Let it Snow!

Nothing is better than the first snow of winter.

In the "Banana Belt" of Oregon we don't see much snow so when we do it is a real treat! (See Video here). We welcomed in the New Year with a fresh heap of beautiful white snow on New Year's Eve at midnight.

The snow was sublime and a real fairytale on a starry night signifying the start of new possibilities. But it was also wet, slippery and dangerous on already dangerous New Year's Eve roads, streets and highways.

Perhaps it is the way of adventure - there is a real surreal aspect to adventuring and it is awe inspiring and beautiful but on the flip-side it can be intimidating and potentially dangerous.

But ultimately, life belongs to those who dare -- so in 2011 -- life with abandon! Let it snow. May you live!!

Organize, organize and clean...

One huge adventure at my house is organizing and cleaning. Okay, its not the most glamorous adventure but it certainly one that turns up unexpected treasures. Today, I found my daughter's holiday music (3 weeks too late), a notebook I've been looking for, my phone charger (already replaced) and a missing shoe (now I have a pair again).

If I told you everything I found in my refrigerator you'd faint! LOL. This is an exercise in bravery to be sure... Nevertheless, the end product was a bright and sparkling frig. I love an organized refrigerator! Okay, the labels don't face the same direction but similar items are in similar places. Success!

I went out hunting at the local store for more cleaning supplies and returned with renewed enthusiasm and blue rubber gloves. Well, I didn't get as far as I hoped - but its a good start toward becoming organized in 2011.

Everything in its place! And then I can finally find it (maybe).

"1-1-11" What an exciting and ominous day. New Year's Day is always the Beginning of Great things, but with a multiple string of the number "1" it must be especially grand. This is a day to plan new adventures and seek exciting opportunities.

Here are our TOP SEVEN suggestions for achieving your New Year's Resolutions!

PLAN: Plan your New Year's Resolutions. It may be a cliche' but the BEST way to tackle the things you want to achieve is to WRITE them down. Keep a calendar of when you want to achieve specific goals.

COMMIT: If you want to run a 10K sign-up for it. Register for the triathlon or marathon. Losing weight? Join the gym and write in your weight journal - yes, get a journal. A journal allows you to track progress and will hold you accountable to your dreams.

ATTITUDE: Think of what you're gaining and not what you're giving up. Be positive.

FIND SUPPORT: Ask friends to support your resolutions and dreams for 2011. Having a cheering team of support will make you go farther, faster and may prevent you from quitting.

BIT SIZE GOALS: Create the steps to your goal. One piece at a time and soon the whole will be completed. What do I mean? Make it manageable. Dream big, but be realistic.

REWARD: Reward yourself when you cross off a task or complete a goal. This can be as small as a magazine, a cup of herbal tea or a motivational book. Whatever you do - mark the occasion of accomplishment.

CELEBRATE: Celebrate your successes. Write "I did it" on your mirror when you finish your goal or have keep your resolution for the first month. Keep it positive.

You've heard the saying, "Nothing good comes easy." This is true in life and couldn't be more true regarding great adventures and great plans. Whether you are training for your first 5K or your first 100 mile ultra run, the commitment, dedication and focus is the same... and it takes time and lots of patience.

The bigger the reward, the more effort and self-sacrifice. In today's society we want everything NOW. Immediate gratification is the way of the world. But at Adventure Woman we know if it's so easy that everyone can do it instantly then it's probably not very meaningful or gratifying. Give us a REAL challenge that will test our limits and push our boundaries. Yes? At Adventure Woman we DREAM TO DARE!!

We have four new REAL Adventure Woman who embrace passion, perseverance and patience. Roz Savage left a high profile career for an even more high profile life of adventure as a world-class rower. Julie Conover gave up her career for her passion for traveling and created her own television show, Passport to Adventure, which she also hosts. Caitlin Boyle started a campaign of kindness that is sweeping the world, and Georgie White became a pioneer of the Grand Canyon with her electric personality and dare-devil explorations.

Other amazing women we are proud to feature include; Tara Andvik who switched from a military career to become a mother and serious archer,and Diane Michelin who successfully combined her love of art with the beauty of fly fishing. Breezy McNamara and MJ MacDougall spent months planning for their independent trek around India, and the painstaking pre-trip reading and research is evident in the excitement and diversity of their trip.

All of these women are uniquely extraordinary. But the one thing they have in common is that they have spent months, years, and decades in preparation for tackling and achieving their dreams and goals. Make a plan and go for it!

I've made a plan to trek to Mt. Everest Basecamp and climb Island Peak. It is still 18 months (Spring 2011) away but I'll need every day to train and prepare for it. The very idea of having an adventure to pursue is thrilling.

What's your next adventure? Take the first step today and before you know it you'll be there (life goes fast). And remember the true "adventure" is not in the destination... but always in the journey!

Rollin with the Changes

Just spent some time with some graduating high school students and it's always interesting and exciting to watch them plan for their lives and futures.

On one hand you admire their enthusiasm and energy for life - the boundless possibilities ahead of them. On the other hand you know how life takes its own unexpected paths and creates it own rhythms and how you really must be a Captain of your own ship and navigate the unknown storms and uncharted waters of your life to succeed. And it is often a difficult journey.

Perhaps, staying flexible, preserving and optimistic are the best possible traits to have as you live life. Life is harder and more rewarding than you can ever expect in high school and college. Sometimes the best planning can go out the window and unexpected doors of opportunity open and shut. Making the "best of it" can seem overwhelming and heroic at times. But the words "this, too will pass" is so true, as well.

At Adventure Woman our motto is "Dream to Dare." We try to encourage women to live their dreams (and feature women who do) because we know that dreams are large and life is short, and its not easy to fit every high school ambition into one lifetime.

But if you can work hard and live with no regrets then you'll be achieving more than you ever expected - and possess a fulfilling and passionate life.

Get creative, dress outlandish, go the extra mile and don't be afraid of diamond false eyelashes,a sequined pantsuit or killer leopard boots (with a fuchsia boa). This is the one day of the year that you can't be too outrageous or too creative.

Adventure Woman & Disneyland

Visiting the "Happiest place on Earth" is not for the weak of heart. It is a real expedition and one that should be taken seriously. First of all, be prepared. Wear comfortable clothes, and even more importantly comfortable shoes. You'll be walking and if not walking, certainly standing, so put "comfort above aesthetics."

Disney is fun - a lot of fun but it takes effort. The other thing it takes is money. Water cost you at least $3 a bottle and you'll be swayed to buy frozen lemonade, cotton candy, ice cream bars and all of the other wonderful goodies that make the day at the theme park just plain fun. The tickets for two parks for two adults and one child (for the day) was almost $300. This is steep for most people who are on a budget in an unforgiving economy. However, if you have AAA you can get discount tickets (other organizations can give you discounts as well and Disney offers it own program to acquire tickets on the cheap such as doing volunteer work). Again, check it out before you go.

The Fast Pass tickets (free) are a good option. You register with your admission ticket for a ride and return at a given time a hour or so later to avoid long lines and waits. This is great in theory, but be prepared to walk to one end of the park and then back to the other to use the fast pass tickets.

Disney is one big photo opportunity and there are Disney Photographers everywhere. The photographer will give you a card (PhotoPass)that you can use over and over again at every official photo op. However, for some reason our photos with Mickey did not load on the Disney Card so we lost them. Lesson? Always take a back-up photo with your own camera (or at least cell phone). The Disney photos are easy, and good quality. When you log in to the site to look at your photos you can add boarders and personalize the photos (you can collect your photos at the park or online for 30 days). They look fantastic - but they are expensive, too.

One experience at Disney that I thought was very reasonable was the wine tasting. You receive three small glasses of wine and paired three cheeses (with crackers) for around $12. Go to the Wine Country Trattoria in California Adventure Park.

We spent about 14 hours at Disney and did so many fun things together - the roller coaster (Scream) the Mickey Mouse Fun Wheel, and the Maliboomer (set to come down Sept. 16), etc., etc., etc. We got the requisite Disney ears and came home totally exhausted.

I got a hotel room at the nearby Hyatt for about $80 a night with free breakfast (good buffet) and a complimentary shuttle. I recommend it.

Yes, it really is the "Happiest place of Earth" - even if it is hard of the feet and the wallet.

Adventure Woman & the Oregon Shakespeare Festival

Last night I attended (with Gusty) the world-renown Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Oregon. They are celebrating their 75th Season this year and the town is filled with a contagious happy spirit.

For those who have never heard of it the Shakespeare Festival is a grand tribute to Shakespeare and his Globe Theater. The outdoor theater (the Elizabethan Stage)is modeled after the famous outdoor theater in London. The performances start at 8PM and the evening soon turns dark and dramatic. The actors are first-rate and it is a wonderful and unforgettable experience.

I saw Henry IV, Part One (a great performance). I was lucky enough to pick up return tickets that were Box Seat tickets and they were fabulously grand. Fantastic views and a beautiful breezy evening. Also playing in the Elizabethan Stage (on alternating nights) is Twelfth Night and the Merchant of Venice.

The Festival also has two indoor theaters: the New Theater and the Angus Bowmer Theater. Currently showing in the New Theater is: Well, Ruined and American Night. And in the Angus Bowmer Theater is Hamlet, Pride and Prejudice, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, She Loves Me, and Throne of Blood.

If possible, arrive early in the day and take the Backstage Tour (offered at 10:00 AM).

This is one of the genuine highlights not only in Oregon but in the USA. Yes, it is that good. Plus, Ashland is a cozy, chic town with shopping, restaurants, coffee shops and a cool artistic upbeat vibe. In a word: go!

Adventure Woman rides Amtrak

Our Adventure Woman Team boarded the Coast Starlight Train that runs from Seattle, Washington to Los Angeles, California. We picked it up in Eugene, Oregon and spent then next 28 hours on the train.

We got a small sleeper for two and it was tight, but comfortable. The train compartments have individual heating and cooling dials so you are able to set your own temperature. The train was clean and the seats were very comfortable (you could even recline them a bit). At night the chairs turn into a bottom bed and a top bunk comes down. This was a snug fit but I had a wonderful sleep as the train chugged and twisted through the mountains and countryside.

The first night we had "room service" and enjoyed dinner in our sleeper. The food is excellent. We had dinner rolls, salads, chicken, pork and a choice of four desserts. I also had a glass of wine with my meal. Yes, it was all very civilized.

The remaining meals were taken in the Parlour Car. In this area we could eat at a table for two while in the dining car you were obligated to share your table with two other people(four at at a table). This is a great way to meet and mingle if you're in the mood for it, but if you're looking for a private conversation or an intimate meal try the Parlour Car.

The views were some of the BEST I have ever seen anywhere in the world. The mountains, and majestic trees were spectacular and it is amazing to fathom how this remote rail line was built. The coastline (once we got into California) was beautiful as well. All of this and none of the hassles of driving. It was wonderful.

A train trip is an ideal place for books, board games and a deck of cards. It is a really fun family experience or a romantic couple's getaway. Next time you're looking for a little adventure - try travel by train.

Adventure Woman Salutes the right to vote!

A lot of women talk about voting - who they voted for and who they didn't. But with the passing of time and generations very few women speak of the right to vote and the women (suffragettes) who spent 72 years actively seeking the reality of the 19th amendment to the United States Constitution - giving women the ability to vote.

Today in 1920 - Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify the 19th amendment making the right to vote a dream come true for thousands of women across the country.

Voting is more than a right - it is an obligation. Women who don't vote because of lack of time or interest insult the work and sacrifices of the women who made it possible for us. Yes, we are busier than ever raising children (often by ourselves) and working (often full-time jobs while raising children by ourselves), but I implore all women to cast their vote.

Why? Voting is power. It is empowering ourselves and our voices as individuals and a group. Women comprise the majority of the adult population and hence, the majority of the voters. Hence, if you wondered what would happen if women ruled the world you only have to get yourself and "your sistas" to the ballot box.

Today lets remember and thank women often forgotten, but whose lives are instrumental to the quality of life and liberty we enjoy today.

Adventure Woman Radio interviewed two fascinating service women. Tara Andvik is an Army Veteran and currently a rising archery champion and avid hunter. She is the mother of two children and her oldest daughter, who is five-years old, has already won a trophy. Tara recently took up the sport of archery and has won many of her competitions. She is a musician who discovered a latent talent and is filling her life with adventure.

Maria Dupertius is active Air Force. She has traveled across the world and teaches survival training to pilots. Additionally she is a 3rd degree black belt, and previously ran a martial arts school. She is the mother/step-mother to six children and is a part-time taxidermist. If that isn't enough she also generously supports Hunting Helping Soldiers.

Two extraordinary women came on Adventure Woman Radio. Andrea Crenshaw and Robin Smith gave very sobering interviews about the ravages of domestic violence. Both discussed early warning signs of a potential abuser, the cycle of violence, the importance of education and how to help a friend or family member in an abusive relationship. Both women are survivors of domestic violence making their stories authentic and significant.

Each of their stories are being featured in the August Edition of Adventure Woman in Adventure Woman University. Adventure Woman University gives women advice on a multitude of topics "Woman to Woman."

Fishin' - but catch'n nothin'!

Spent Saturday trying to catch some fish using my new fly fishing techniques (just took an angling class)but only caught some emerald green moss and a few slimy weeds.

The woman nearby (9 months pregnant) caught a whooper of a fish. Is it technique, luck, karma? I have never understood how fishing really works. After all, we were casting in the same pond and using the same lures.

Perhaps, you have to be zen with the fishing rod and your confidence and positive fishing energy needs to flow down the length of the line and onto the hook; mesmerizing the fish to bite? Who knows?

I associate fishing to playing the lottery. Either the odds of getting a big one are with you or you'll get skunked.

Obviously, there are professional fishermen and fisherwomen who have that 'something extra.' This magical and mysterious quality that appears to lure the fish in like they're the "Pied Piper" of angling.

There is an elegance to fly fishing casting and this I enjoyed (when my line wasn't tangled in the trees). And the beauty of throwing a great cast occasionally made up for my lack of catching any fish.

God doesn't count your time on Earth when you're fishing anyway...

So I ate peanut butter and jelly instead of having a fish fry. But the sandwich was good, and I had a good day of fishing - in spite of catching no fish.

Adventure Woman - Trains, Planes and Automobiles!

The theme of our July 4th celebration was "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles." We took a good ol' fashion car excursion to the northern coastal portion of Oregon and had an adventurous time.

One of our first stops was at the Evergreen Air and Space Museum. This receives two adventurous thumbs up. The legendary Spruce Goose airplane is there (think of Leonardo in the film, Aviator) and hundreds (or so it seemed) of other sleek and threatening planes.

The space museum is housed in a nearby separate building. This is worth a dedicated visit and lots of fun for the kids. In between the two museums is the IMAX Theater. They were showing several 3D films (we saw Legends of Aviation)and it is an entertaining and educational pit stop between the two overwhelming museums.

We camped out in a little town called Garibaldi. The town has a historic train running directly across from the campgrounds and takes visitors to Rockaway Beach. We actually drove to Rockaway to see the Fourth of July Parade (lots of fun) before catching lunch at the next aviation museum, The Tillamook Air Museum.

The Tillamook Air Museum is amazing, interesting, historic and simply fascinating. In a word - go! Also in Tillamook is the famous cheese factory (with 38 types of icecream!).

The final evening we took the old steam train to Rockaway to see the July 4th fireworks display on the beach. We had a fabulous view and could leisurely sit on the train eating our hot dogs and enjoying the entire evening.

This was a wonderful July 4th celebration - combing the patriotism of small town America with some of the best historic aircraft in the world. The stream train was just a thrill and frosting on the cake!

There are some fantastic July festivals on the horizon. The Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland starts on July 2nd, as well as, the Copenhagen Jazz festival.

Who can stay away from the Roswell UFO Festival? This is taking place from July 1 to July 5 in Roswell, New Mexico.

In addition to the great fireworks at the 4th of July. Celebrate American history by visiting the Battle of Gettysburg reenactment in Pennsylvania from July 2 to the 11th.

The Il Palio horse race is running in Sienna, Italy, starting July 2nd to the 4th. The Savonlinna Opera Festival is on in Finland from the 2nd to the 17th. And Festival d' Avignon is on in France from the 2nd to the 26th of July.

Adventure Woman loves Athens, Greece!

Seven Must-Do Sights of Athens, Greece

With the Winter Olympics fresh on our minds it is a great time to visit Greece – the birthplace of the games. Greece is a treasure-trove of wonderful antiquities and awe-inspiring ruins. The majestic city of Athens is filled with an unrivaled amount history and art. Try our Seven ‘Must-Do’ sights as a starting point.

1. The Agora: This is where Socrates spoke and St. Paul preached his sermons. As early as the 6th century BC this ancient marketplace was the bustling city center of Athens. The heyday of Agora lasted for over 1200 years and if these was could talk it would speak volumes. Sit on the grassy lawns and try to imagine the sounds of the past.

2. Fliopappos Hill: This rocky hill is known for it’s inspirational powers. Often referred to as the “Hill of Muses” this slope was a ‘Mecca’ for poets and dreamers. Today, it is visited by curious tourists, and on the first day of Lent; a multitude of carefree and colorful kite flyers.

3. The Temple of Zeus: This is home to not only the Temple of Zeus, but the Temple of Kronos and Rhea, the Temple of Apollo Delphinos, the Law Court at Delphinon, and Hadrian’s Arch, among others. In other words it is a visual cornucopia of wonders. Construction began in 515 BC and lasted almost 700 years.

4. The Acropolis: See, our current (March 3, 2010) edition of Adventure Howl.

5. National Archaeological Museum: This museum houses the greatest and most significant collection of antiquities from the magnificent ancient cultures. See the Bronze collection, the vase collection and the Egyptian wing for starters. A world-class museum not to be missed.

6. The Roman Forum & Tower of Winds: After the Agora became old news the Romans built this unforgettable forum for commerce and conversation. The Tower was the focal point with a water clock fed with water from the acropolis.

7. The Kerameikos: It may sound morbid but this cemetery is worth the visit. It is rich in statuary, elaborate tombs, and history. Behind these walls lurk not only the remains of nobleman and great warriors, but memories of prostitutes and shady financial deals.

Visiting the Acropolis (Athens, Greece) is more than just another excursion; it is an event. This hilltop spectacle overlooking the city of Athens is not only one of the ‘must visit’ places in Athens, but also one of the ‘Must Visit’ places in the world. Yes, it’s wonderment ranks up there with the Pyramids of Egypt, the statues of Easter Island, the Taj Mahal of India or Machu Picchu of Peru. You just have to visit it in your lifetime.

This “Sacred Rock” has had a profound impact on the architecture of the western world and is considered one the world’s most important historic sites. Built during the late 5th Century BC from beautiful ivory marble; the perfect artistic proportions and expansive visual grandeur of the Acropolis is breath-taking.

One of the most famous temples at the Acropolis is the Parthenon. The world renowned Parthenon was created for the virgin goddess Athena. The imposing columns and intricate carvings are representative of the best of classic Greek architecture. At one time a gold and ivory statue of Athena was housed inside.

Another favorite site is the Erechtheion. This structure unites separate temples of Athena and Poseidon. Handsome human sculptures replace columns as support structures for the temples. Myth has it that the two deities fought over the patronage of Athenians on this very location.

The new Acropolis museum is a requirement when visiting. The museum replaces the older, less sophisticated Acropolis Museum. Glass floors and windows allow visitors views of an ancient Christian settlement beneath the museum and outside views of the Acropolis Temples.

Criticisms have been waged that the museum is so sleek that it doesn’t mesh with its surrounding, however, the world can no longer claim that Greece is unable to care for her treasures. Namely, the campaign has grown stronger for the return of the Elgin Marbles (taken by the Earl of Elgin in 1799 from the Acropolis and now housed at the British Museum in London). While the return of the marbles is doubtful; the heightened care of the invaluable antiquities is a gift to the world.

Santa Monica Pier & the Ivy at the Shore

A famous restaurant to see the Hollywood elite and celebrities is the charming restaurant in Santa Monica, Ivy at the Shore. On our visit we didn't see any familiar faces, but we had an excellent lunch (rivaled only by the lunch at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel).

The airy restaurant has an outdoor terraced area near the sidewalk and a distinct pink and green tropical theme. The waiters (I only saw men) were dressed in pink shirts with leafy green ties. They were both friendly and efficient. It is a California haunt and an experience to taken in if your willing to drop a few extra dollars to get the celebrity treatment (the meal was delicious).

The Santa Monica Pier is one of the most famous places on the California Coast. It has numerous rides, and food vendors. The roller coaster is "okay" and doesn't compare to the thrill of the Giant Dipper on the Santa Cruz Boardwalk. The best ride is the Ferris Wheel which gives you eye-popping views of Santa Monica and the endless azure coastline.

The Beach is lovely, but was very crowded (I went on a Sunday). But everyone was well behaved: creating sandcastles, swimming, boogie boarding and tanning.

Certainly, any curious tourist must visit the Santa Monica Pier. It is classic California and beautiful (and photogenic)in every direction.

The Promenade is nearby and is filled with great restaurants and terrific shopping. Take a short walk to view it or stop for a coffee. Again, people watching is always entertaining in California.

Universal Studios. A Universal Adventure!

Universal Studios is one of the best theme parks in the world. Nothing beats the interesting, and exciting, Studio Tour. The Studio Tour takes place on a tram and escorts you through the actual Universal Studios lot. You get to see the set of sitcoms (like Desperate Housewives)and many of the Universal block-buster films.

The Studio Tour is pleasant and effortless. You sit and listen as you watch film and video segments and play while seeing the real deal. The prompts are cool to see, too. They display an extensive collection of film cars and then a show a demonstration of how the studio can get the stunt cars to turn, crash and burn. The tour is well over an hour so grab some frozen lemonade before you board (sold at the entrance to the ride).

The rides at Universal are good, but not plentiful. To save time consider spending more money as getting the express pass (Head of the line) to cut down on wait time. You'll still have to wait - however, not so long. Minutes versus hours.

The Simpson Ride is a must. It's loads of fun and just an amazing combination of thrill ride and technology. The same goes for the Revenge of the Mummy Ride but, visitors complained that the ride was too short.

The Jurassic Park water ride is worth a whirl and doesn't get you too wet if you don't sit on the sides or in the front (an 84 foot plunge is at the end). Also, don't leave without taking in the Shrek Attraction. It is in 4-D and extremely entertaining.

Adventure Woman recommends Universal as a great way to entertain the kids and learn about the film industry. Try the Banana Split Dipp'n Dots. A real treat.

Hollywood Walk of Fame - Fab!

The Hollywood Walk of Fame is just plain fun. Not only is it fun, but it is one of the few really thrilling attractions in the Los Angeles area that is free. Imagine over 2400 stars on the Walk featuring your favorite celebrities. Not only will you find people from Hugh Heffner to Shirley Temple,but you'll also find animated characters like Mickey Mouse.

The Walk was created in the late 1950's and opened in 1960. The Walk is approximately 18 blocks long (1.3 miles) and is located on Hollywood Blvd and Vine. Each star on the walk has five points - each point representing the five categories of the entertainment industry: motion picture, broadcast television, theater,radio and record/recording. Gene Autry is the only person to have a star in all five categories.

You must also check out thehttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif hand and footprints in front of Grauman's Chinese Theater. Here, the stars (such as Marilyn Monroe) have written their names in the cement and placed their hands and feet in the cement as well. It's just an exciting experience to imagine all of these legends were once in this very spot!

Check out the wax museum nearby, too. It's just a great time seeing all of the stars and having the opportunity to pose with them (however, silly). There is a charge for the wax museum so make sure you have the time to really take int he attraction.

This will be an adventure you won't forget!

Beverly Hills, Baby!

A trip to Beverly Hills is an adventure. For those who want to see, smell and feel the "good life" take a stroll around the Regent Beverly Hills Wilshire Hotel meets the Rodeo Drive Area. You'll see expensive cars pull-up,and zoom by like you've never seen them before.

The Regent Beverly Hills Wilshire Hotel (on Wilshire Drive)was the scene of the hit 1980's movie, "Pretty Woman" with Julia Roberts and Richard Gere. It still retains that quiet elegance and chic that put Vivian (Robert's title role) into a nervous frenzy.

However, intimidating the hotel maybe to out-of-towners the staff could not have been more pleasant and patient. We had one of the best lunches (if not the best lunch) at the outside terrace of the hotel as we leisurely ate while people watching.

Breezy had the pea soup and the caterpillar of sushi and I ate the carpaccio and the 'to-die-for' cheese plate. Gusty, the fish and with the creamiest most buttery mashed potatoes ever created.

While people watching we managed to catch a glimpse of Scott Disick (Kourtney's baby's daddy) from the Keeping Up with the Kardashians reality show who was looking very, well, slick and dapper. As if he went through the fine-grit polish of the rock tumbler maybe one extra turn. Nevertheless, it was exciting spotting a celebrity-type in Beverly Hills. Isn't that what every tourist hopes for after all?

Venice and Venice Beach

Venice Beach is simply beautiful. It is a wonderful beach to visit with the kids. The sand is warm and golden and the coastline has lots of shells (mostly tiny) for collecting. Remember to bring a bag for them if you'll be shell searching. I forgot and ended up with broken shells in the bottom of my purse!

The city of Venice, California, was actually named after Venice, Italy and canals were created to mirror its namesake. At one time gondolas floated in the canals of Venice creating an Italian feel and spirit. It is this 'off-beat' crazy vibe that still persists today.

Today Venice Beach is most famous for the body builders bulging with obscenely developed muscles. The original "Muscle Beach" was located in Santa Monica but shifted to Venice Beach starting in 1952. The weight pen is an attraction in its own right with spectators watching the athletics workout. This was a regular hangout of now governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The restaurants around Venice Beach and the promenade are stellar. Many have open-air seating and fresh seafood. The people in the area are especially Bohemian and colorful which makes for fabulous people watching.

We stayed at the Inn at Venice Beach. It's close to the beach (a 3 minute walk)and offers a nice breakfast every morning (complimentary) in an open air courtyard. The location is excellent for those who want to take advantage of Venice Beach and all the fun and excitement it has to offer.

Santa Cruz Boardwalk and the Dream Inn.

Santa Cruz is a vibrant and colorful city. It is one of my favorites. It's fun, beautiful and has a bevy of delicious restaurants. Santa Cruz is a respite from the craziness of San Francisco to the North and Los Angles to the South. It has a fun, beach vibe that lifts your spirits and put s a spring in your step!

The historic Santa Cruz Boardwalk is a focal point of Santa Cruz. It is the oldest surviving amusement park in California and was created to be the west coast version of Coney Island in New York.

The highlight of the Boardwalk is the famous wooden roller-coaster, "The Giant Dipper." The Giant Dipper is the 6th oldest roller coaster in the United States opening on May 17, 1924. It is one heck of a twisting, turning scream-fest and a sheer thrill to ride (I actually rode it twice). It plunges into a dark tunnel and just gets better from there.

There a lot of other terrific rides in the park and it is anything but sleepy. In the summer they have bands on the beach to liven things up even more. You can purchase single tickets for the rides or buy a wristband if you're staying all day.

If you're not wanting to eat the 'junk food' from the Boardwalk (try the deep-fried Twinkies)then head over to the Pier. The Pier has one great restaurant after the other and the menus are fabulous. The views are equally exciting with the surfers on one side of the Pier and the Boardwalk rides the other. Of course, the seafood is fresh and mouth-watering.

We stayed at the Dream Inn and it really is a dream. The views are spectacular with the hotel located right on the beach. The Dream Inn has a beautiful outdoor heated pool that has direct access to the beach.

You can see the lights of the Boardwalk from the hotel (a 3 minute walk) and the whole scene is just "California Dreamy." I left the sliding door of our hotel room open all night (all rooms have balconies or patios) and listened to the waves crash as I fell asleep. Heavenly!

The Aquarius Restaurant at the hotel served a yummy breakfast and the large windows offered morning scenes of kids learning to surf and running on the beach.

A great stop for any road-trip.

The Avenue of the Giants and the Benbow Inn

The Avenue of the Giants is one of the "Must See" sights of the world. These trees will leave you in awe and give you a new appreciation of nature and time. The Avenue is a scenic section of US Highway 101 in the Northern section of California.

You can stop your car and walk right up to these magnificent beauties. Several are fallen and you can check out their amazing root systems - which are huge (as one can imagine). The Southern entrance is in Gaberville and the Northern entrance is in Fortuna. The Avenue is a great tourist attraction and is completely free. You can literally spend the day admiring this gentle giants.

There are other more 'curious' tree attractions along the way. Such as the Immortal Tree which is 950 years old and has withstood a logger's axe, a lightening strike and a flood. Next to the tree is a hollowed section of a log which makes a great photo opportunity.

Founder's Grove takes you on a 1/2 mile self-guided walk where you can see some fantastic trees - most notably the Dyerville Giant (370 feet tall) which fell in 1991.

The Tree House is a lot of fun for kids. It is a hollowed out tree that is now a playhouse with windows and doors. A must see.

My favorite is the Drive Thru Tree. Drive your car through a real tree. It is wildly fun and tests your nerves (wondering if your car will fit through the tree!).

The Benbow is a wonderful historic hotel and a terrific place to relax and unwind. The hotel has had its share of famous visitors from US Presidents to Spencer Tracy and Clark Gable. It is still a causally elegant place to relax set in the forest with a beach on a river below.

The bar is a charming hang-out and the restaurant absolutely superb. Don't miss it if you are traveling near the Humboldt Redwoods.

If you're looking for a great family adventure that combings nature, history and lots of fun try this fabulous combination.

Baskadora's 25th Birthday!

Horse'n around on Baskadora's 25th Birthday.

Baskadora is one of my oldest friends. I received Baskadora for my 22nd birthday (February, 1987) twenty-three years ago. She was just 1 1/2 years old and the prettiest thing you'd ever seen at the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show.

Over the last 23 years Baskadora and I have been through a lot together. We both have had daughters (she had a filly and I have a 21 year-old and a 9 year-old). We have moved around the country together (Arizona, Oregon, Oklahoma, Florida and back to Oregon) and have seen our fortunes rise and fall together more than once.

She has been around longer than any other other beloved pet, child or husband. The man that gave me Baskadora was my first husband, Gerry, and he died in 1995. Her significance as a friend, stabilizing force, and constant source of happiness cannot be underestimated.

We have had great times together. We played polo in Arizona in the early years, and then did endurance rising in Tulsa. We took jumping lessons together and tried a little cross-country in Florida. Today we ride occasionally, and she lives at a barn with lots of other horses and friends. Baskadora is one of the only horses at the barn who will come by name - from across several fields - to say, "hello" or to be put in her stall for the evening.

My first Adventure Woman newspaper article featured me sitting on Baskadora. We made the cover of the paper and a there was a terrific inside shot of Baskadora at the entrance to the barn with the sun pouring down on her. She glowed majestically (several people asked if she was a statue or a real horse). Yes, she has been around for every significant event in my life for the last twenty-three and a half years. Lucky me.

People love their horses. And if I may say so, women especially love their horses. Personally, I have been blessed to have such a wonderful companion in life and it is my privilege to say, "Happy Birthday Bask. May the next twenty-five years be just as good as the first twenty-five. I love you!"

Death by Kayak

I spent the weekend Kayaking the Umpqua River. Now this is a beautiful spot in the world and the weather was cool but sunny. Kayaking is a fantastic sport because you glide along the water like you're a part of it and feel so free and unencumbered.

This is not a "roll" kayak. I have yet to master the kayak roll - and if anyone has any "helpful hints" or "kayaking roll secrets" I would certainly appreciate receiving them.

Just when I thought I was doing well heading the down rapids (Class 2)I noticed a fallen tree about twenty years in front of me. The rapids were moving so fast that I was unable to navigate around it. So I crashed into it.

I stuck my arm out to prevent myself from crashing into the trunk of the tree and what I did was halt the kayak, but not the rush of the river so the kayak actually flipped underneath the tree (with me in it). I found myself upside down underneath the kayak. I swam out of the kayak but every time I tried to reach the surface my head hit the kayak or the log or tree branches. I must of hit my head four times and I was running out of oxygen and time. I wondered if someone would help me, but I quickly realized that "the cavalry wasn't coming."

I thought I was going to die underneath that tree. It seemed like forever and ever... I remember trying to gather my wits and I decided to push away from the tree as long and as hard as I could. Suddenly, I 'popped up.'

I was floating down the river in my life jacket and even when I finally hit the surface I couldn't breathe. I just gasped and gasped and gasped - and bobbed and bobbed and bobbed. It took a long time to swim to shore and I was so exhausted - totally spent. I couldn't talk - I just breathed - as deeply as I could - and I was so thankful to be alive.

The rest of the trip was relatively pleasant and uneventful. But I kept reliving my panicked state underneath the tree - wondering if I was seconds or minutes from drowning. Regardless, I hope never to feel so trapped underwater again. It was an uneasy adventure...

Fabulous Over Forty Contest!

These last five days I have been trying to get into the finals of MORE Magazines Fabulous Over Forty contest. I was hoping to bring attention to Adventure Woman, and if lucky enough, win some prize money to build our adventure (AdventureWomanJr.com) website for girls. This was my motivation.

The first step in entering the contest was admitting that I was actually over forty... Next step, I wrote my 150 word essay and submitted a recent photograph (taken within the last 3 months - contest rules). Paid a $25 entry fee and I was good to go!

Then came the more stressful part. Getting votes. Acquiring votes was not so easy because people had to go to the website, register, locate your profile and then vote. It was an investment of time for anyone kind enough to cast a vote for a contestant. As a consequence, getting votes was akin to finding pieces of gold or buried treasures. Yes, you had to seek them out!

I posted the contest on my Facebook page (Beth Walz) and encouraged friends (or is it hassled friends?) to vote for me. I was calling in old debts to get people to vote for me - like the time I gave my chocolate chip cookie to a friend on the bus in 6th grade (remember...?). Yes, I was asking friends from elementary school on up to law school to vote for me - which was an 'old saw' for most of them since I had been running for student council forever - and ever.

Actually, one of the nicest parts about the contest was hearing back from these old friends and receiving their encouraging words of support. There is nothing so wonderful as receiving a 'pat on the back' from an old elementary school/Jr.High/High school and college friends in a contest for people over forty!

I have no idea if I made the final cut of the 100 women who received the most votes. But I do know there are some kind, beautiful, intelligent and accomplished women over forty in the contest and I was in awe of many of them. Coming from a woman who runs a website -AdventureWoman.com - that features extraordinary women; this contest really had a 'mother-load' of phenomenal females. Fighter pilots to Federal wardens. Really? And they look like Christie Brinkley or Cheryl Tiegs! Yikes! Amazing stuff.

Yes, it would be an honor to go to the finals but regardless, it was - a grand adventure. And ya'll know how I feel about a new adventure. Yes, I just loved it! I will you let you know - when I know - if I made the 100 mark.

For those of you who did vote for me. A BIG Thank You! I appreciate your help and support. It was my family and friends (and the occasional kindness of strangers) who made the contest so much fun. I am grateful to all of you. Thanks again, and again!

Happy Cinco de Mayo

What a fantastic day to pop into a Mexican Restaurant and have a delicious meal. Salsa, chips, guacamole and tacos are oh, so delicious. Maybe a margarita or deep-fried icecream for the more decadent diner.

Another fun way to celebrate Cinco de mayo is to make a Mexican dinner with the kids. Let them fill their own tacos with an assortment of toppings or really go to town and get a pinata.

What ever you do make it an adventure. Cinco de Mayo is a terrific opportunity to celebrate an exciting culture and discuss the excitement to be found around the world.

Mother/Daughter and Doggy Adventures

My daughter, Breezy, sorority had their annual Mother's Weekend and what a great time. A University of Oregon baseball game (at their new field) and several brunches, lunches and dinners. We also went to the local Farmers Market in Eugene and what a treat. We bought fresh basil, several types of homemade goat's cheese (sweet and spicy) and homemade breads. Heaven! The artists were amazingly varied and soooo talented. I wanted to buy everything. Support your local Farmer's market and your local artists!

We ran into a guy who was promoting Pepsi Products at the sorority house and come to find out this friendly guy is a young entrepreneur. He and his siblings are opening the new Sniff Dog Hotel in Portland - scheduled to open in two weeks (May 23).

You need to check out this hotel. It has a among other wonderful things, a President's Suite for your dog with a television and furniture. You can watch your dog via your laptop from anywhere. Worry not, pet owners!

Ice Hot at the Ice Lounge

Another fun and "totally cool" destination in Vegas is the Ice Lounge. The Ice Lounge is called Minus 5 because, well... it's Minus 5 degrees inside. The Minus 5 Ice Lounge is located at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino.

You'll receive a coat, gloves (you can keep the gloves) and boots with the price of admission. You can upgrade to a fur coat and hat for an additional cost or wear the standard blue parka (I opted for the parka). We bought tickets that gave us the garb and two drinks for $28 (you can get the one drink package for $18). Obviously, you can buy more drinks, but this will get you started.

The icy bar is filled with beautifully carved ice sculptures and beautiful people. The bar tender "Jeremiah" was totally charming and friendly. He offered to take his jacket (and shirt) off for our photos and when he did we thought the ice was going to melt. "Head to Hollywood" we encouraged him. Yes, he is gorgeous.

What is especially "cool" is that the cocktail glasses are made of ice (and the specialty Ice Lounge drinks are completely delicious).

Special note: check out the discount books in the local Taxi Cabs. We each received a FREE tee-shirt with admission to the Ice Lounge and received lots of other discounts around town. Really, check it out. You'll get great freebies and 2-for-1 admissions.

Pole Dancing, the Playboy Cub and Sin City Comedy

You can't envision about Vegas without the legendary dancing girls, otherwise known as the "Vegas Show Girls" with the fabulous outfits and famous, bedazzled feathered headdresses. They are as famous as the casino gambling or the bright lights of the strip. Vegas, of course, offers a variety of exotic dancing; including, beautiful show girls, topless dancers, strippers and pole dancers.

In fact, there has been a movement to turn these different forms of dance into legitimate methods of exercise. And why not if you're having fun, getting stronger and becoming more flexible. So it was out of sheer curiosity that my friends and I signed up for Pole Dancing lessons. After all, I am all about trying something new and then there's the old adage, "When in Rome..."

We booked classes at The Pole Dancing Studio. This is owned and run by female pioneer and entrepreneur, Fawnia, who was the first person to put the concept of exotic dance, and pole dancing on video as an exercise form. Our personal instructor (we took a private class) was a woman named, Trixie, who had a great sense of humor, a lot of patience and a significant depth of dance knowledge. The studio itself is lit in a rich bordello red and the shinny brass poles are spaced out with just room to allow you to dance and swing to your hearts delight. After an hour we were ready for a glass of wine and a french meal underneath the Eiffel Tower over at the Paris Hotel. Would I do it again? You betcha! If you're really daring she'll teach you haw to lap dance or do a strip tease... But it's Vegas!

Dinner at Nevo is always delicious and the views of from the windows are staggeringly beautiful. After Nevo we went upstairs to the Playboy Club. The Club is fun but a little spendy (as they say in Oregon). The drinks with tax and tip are nearly $20 and the minimum bet at the tables is $25. But it is Playboy and the infamous bunny theme... the celebrity theme... is everywhere.

We met two very nice bunnies Jen and Renee who were very sweet and friendly. Funny, they reminded me of girls my daughter's age rather than international sex symbols which - I guess - is more a reflection of the years under my belt. Ultimately, it a good time, and if you're in Vegas you should give it a whirl. We left for higher ground again and went to Moon (the nightclub) but the room was young and crowded so we left for more gambling and other Vegas trappings.

The final night we hit the Sin City Comedy Club and I laughed so hard my stomach and throat hurt for two days after. The comics are wildly talented and funny. We upgraded our tickets to VIP for $11 and got front row with no standing in line. Always ask about the VIP option - they offer it just about everywhere - and many times the extra $$$ is well worth the extra experience factor.

Viva Las Vegas

Las Vegas is an adventure playground. There are so many fun and exciting things to do that you can become paralyzed with indecision. But as any seasoned Adventure Woman knows it's best to start with a plan of attack.

The first day of my Vegas trip my girlfriends and myself decided to go sky diving. What?! Yes, we decided to take the ultimate plunge! Maybe this isn't really the ultimate plunge when visiting Vegas. During my last two visits to Vegas I got married. First at the Venetian and then re-married at the Graceland Chapel by Elvis himself. Whether I felt more nervous jumping from a plane three miles up or walking down a 30 foot aisle is debatable.

Nevertheless, met at the Tropicana Hotel at 7AM and were picked up by a courtesy van. We signed release of liability papers (you jump + you die = your fault)and watched a funky video by a ZZ Top -looking bearded man. Once we arrived at the airport we suited up and waited for our plane.

I was the first one in and hence, the last one out of the plane. I was hooked (by four points) to my tandem jumping partner Scott. It seemed that we ascended forever and ever and ever and ever and ever and... We were so high I could barley make out the cars and buildings on the ground. And then the the door of the plane opens and we big jumping. It happens so fast you barely have time to think - and that may be a good thing.

When I watched the last person jump and realized it was my turn it occurred to me to change my mind and fly back to the airport. But before I knew it I was on the edge of the plane ready to jump. I kept my eyes shut and felt Scott push us forward and then we fell like rocks out of the plane. And we kept falling and falling and falling and falling... Finally I opened my eyes to see the world around me and it was beautiful. Initially it is difficult to breathe, but eventually I caught my breath and began enjoying the experience. Wow! I saw my friends beneath me with their parachutes open but mind was still shut. Oh no!

Then there was a sudden pull upward and my shoot opened and we began floating. This was absolutely exhilarating. Scott handed me the handles to guide the parachute and it was fantastic. Then we started doing twists and turns that made me scream with laughter... Before I knew it we were landing. Landing like a feather hitting the ground. It was one of the best experiences of my life. Never sky dived before? Then you have to do it. It is an adventure everyone should experience one. I loved it! Would I do it again.... ahhhh... I hope so!
